ChromaScript is a conceptual, ornamental typeface that explores the neurological phenomenon of Grapheme-Color Synesthesia. Transcending the traditional model of a typeface, it utilises the synesthetic framework of associating letters and glyphs with specific colors and shapes, thereby allowing for a unique system that is generative, with ever-changing associational pattern-making possibilities, examining the intersection of color, form & syntax structures.
Grapheme-color synesthesia is a condition characterized by enduring and consistent associations between letters/glyphs and colors. For people with grapheme-color synesthesia, letters have fixed enduring conscious color associations. For example, the letter A might be red, B might be blue, C might be yellow & so on.
ChromaScript goes beyond the conventional format of a typeface, that is, to provide a coherent platform for communication - flipping it, to create an atmospheric language through color, layer and form.
How ChromaScript Works
Applications for the typeface are not limited allowing scope for limitless imagination, including practical uses in the field of textile design, a springboard for logo explorations, textural brushes, home decor merchandise, custom art prints for walls and public murals.
ChromaScript was designed at Rhode Island School of Design in Fall 2018.
